Resolution, format and size of the graphic files


Since the standard graphic resolution on the web is 72 dpi, it is unprofitable to acquire/scan illustrations with a higher resolution for our web site. All photos received will be set to 72 dpi.

High quality, large graphic files.
.tif or .tiff
JPEG Joint Photographic Expert Group
The user defines the quality. The size of the file is proportionnal.
.jpg or .jpeg
GIF Graphic Interchange Format
Generally small file. For graphics with 256 colors max. only. The gif89a format allows animations.
.gif

The best format for color graphics is JPEG. The GIF format may be used for black & white photos (SEM photos...).

Your illustrations should follow these rules :

  • JPEG format (try GIF if B&W),
  • 250 x 250 pixels max,
  • resolution : 72 dpi.

to ensure a quick download time as well as a reasonnable quality.


 

Send your photos

On most Internet providers or email servers the disk space dedicated to emails is limited in size. If you send an email when this disk space is full, your mail will not be recorded on the server and you will get an error message.

Although the webmaster will visit the email box every day, you should :

  • try to follow the rules described above.
  • try to send your photos as soon they are ready.
  • compress the graphic files with winzip.
  • if you plan to send a large set of photos, save your files on a ZIP or JAZZ cartridge or on a CD and send it to :

Customize your photos for our purpose

The characteristics of the specimens illustrated should be emphasized :
  • draw a scale bar,
  • use arrows (or other "accessories") to point out special or important features,
  • add a file (text, word ...) to describe your illustrations if you do not want to customize the photos.
  • etc...
